Starting its work in February 1974, in an era characterised by fear of imminent environmental collapse, nuclear Armageddon and energy blackouts, CAT has emerged as one of the UK's most important exponents of practical environmentalism and a leading centre for environmental education and zero carbon research.

Author Allan Shepherd looks at CAT's 40-year history by using the oral testimony of those most directly associated with it: 63 workers, members, trustees, friends and neighbours.

In doing so he has created the first in-depth historical analysis of what must be one of the most interesting social and environmental experiments in modern British history.
