Read Manchester is a National Literacy Trust campaign to support and encourage schools, families and children to read for enjoyment. The initiative provides those who need support most with opportunities to engage with books and inspire them to make reading a priority in their everyday lives.
Research from the charity shows children who enjoy reading are three times more likely to read above the level expected for their age, yet 1 in 11 children in the most disadvantaged areas of the city do not have a book of their own at home.
What’s more, COVID-19 is set to reverse the progress made to close the literacy gap between disadvantaged children and their more affluent peers. So getting books into the hands of children who need them most has never been more important. Just one book has the power to spark a love of reading and change a child’s life story.
So how can you give the gift of reading?
By purchasing one (or more!) of the below books, it enables the Read Manchester team from the National Literacy Trust to distribute a second copy to children who need them most, through foodbank parcels and deliveries to families in temporary accommodation.
You can also support the charity’s Christmas appeal by texting GIFTOFREADING to 70490 to give £7 (this costs £7 + a standard message rate) or donate online.
