In 1884, Whistler and Sickert stayed in the remote Cornish fishing village of St Ives.

From that time onwards it has been the inspiration and home of many notable painters.

The 1985 exhibition at the Tate Gallery focused on the years 1939-64, the era of Wallis, Nicholson, Hepworth, Lanyon, Wynter, Leach, Heron, Frost and Gabo, to name but a few of the 28 artists represented.

It reawakened an interest in St Ives which led to the founding of the Tate Gallery St Ives eight years later.

The biographical notes, exhibition histories and bibliographies on each of the artists have been fully updated for the second edition.
