This is an exploration of the importance of spoken language, examining the structures and sounds of speech.

Investigative strategies set out in the first two chapters can then be applied to allow students to analyse different forms of spoken language, from talking in private to public speaking, including prepared speeches in parliament, news broadcasting, lectures and ceremonial language.

A case study concludes the investigation of spoken language by examining links between speech and gender.

The book is part of the "Living Language" series, which is designed to meet needs in the teaching of A Level English Language and A Level English Language and Literature.
