When struggling children's writer and alcoholic Robert (Downey) moves back in with his mother in an effort to go straight, he doesn't expect to have his writer's block cured.

As he stumbles across some old dolls fixed in strange places around the house, he takes them up to the attic and begins writing a story about them.

However, little does he know that the dolls have lives of their own and have taken notice of him...
