Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) was one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century, was also talented in art and many other subjects, as his publications and correspondence show. This book of his selected unpublished correspondence written between 1903 and 1950 includes the responses of the addressees, giving a vivid picture of the historical controversies between the composer and other major figures in the field. Each of the correspondences, with pioneering musicologist Guido Adler, eminent critic Olin Downes, and cello virtuosi Pablo Casals and Emanuel Feuermann, is presented in separate chapters with introductory comments.

The letters are reprinted unaltered in the original languages and in English translation.
