In 1943 in Rome, Israel (Giorgio Tirabassi) runs a circus which is home to Cencio (Pietro Castellitto), Mario (Giancarlo Martini), Fulvio (Claudio Santamaria) and Matilde (Aurora Giovinazzo), who are each gifted with extraordinary abilities.

As they attempt to survive the war, they come to the attention of Franz (Franz Rogowski), a powerful and dangerous German clairvoyant who seeks to harness their abilities for the benefit of the Nazi war effort, but they are determined to forge their own path.
