The Soviet Union's answer to the Lockheed Starlifter first flew in 1971 and has since become a familiar sight both in the the military situations for which it was intended, and as a commercial freighter worldwide.

It has also been developed as the Il-78 for aerial refuelling, and in AEW and other versions, all of which are included in this Aerofax Compiled by noted Russian aviation writers and historians from a wealth of first-hand Russian sources, there is not only a full development history and technical description, but a comprehensive history of every evolution of the design and its service.

There are truly extensive tables detailing each aircraft built, with c/n, serial and so on, and detailed notes on every operator, both civil and military, and their fleets.
