This is the Culture, Media and Sport Committee's second report on the preparations for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, following its first report which focused on the funding ("London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games: Funding and Legacy (HC 69-I)",).

This report, "London 2012 Games: The Next Lap (HC 104-I)", reviews the funding, the venues and their legacy, the legacy for community sport (increasing participation in sport), and elite sporting performance (medal targets, sponsorship, etc). Conclusions and recommendations include: the Committee welcomes many of the achievements to date and feels that the timetable is realistic; the land assembly process is complete, within budget and without significant delay; major sponsorships have already been negotiated; the budget, though much inflated from the original, is now soundly based but there is a bewildering array of commitments, promises and plans for using the potential of the Games to increase participation in sport.

A comprehensive nationwide strategy is still needed; and, the ambitious aims from UK Sport for performance in the Games will be good for British elite sport. The accompanying "London 2012 Games: The Next Lap - Volume II: Oral and Written Evidence (HC 104-II)" is available to buy separately.
