When Doctor Eduardo Plarr (Gere) leaves his hometown to better his life he departs for an Argentinian city at the centre of political unrest.

After befriending the British Honorary Consul, Charles Fortnum (Michael Caine), matters become complicated when Eduardo falls for Fortnum's wife, Clara (Elpidia Carrillo).

The cast also includes Bob Hoskins and Joaquim de Almeida.
