These poems are intended to be read alongside the first part of my autobiography "Nemone". The first group were inspired by the years I spent on the Greek island of Mykonos, some of the happiest and most inspirational of my life. In 1961 when Jimmy, my husband, and I visited the island for the first time, it seemed totally unspoiled, a veritable earthly paradise. There were two boats a week to and from Piraeus: mass tourism was decades away. A few remarkable foreigners visited, scholars and archaeologists drawn to the neighboring archaic site of Delos, glitterati such as Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis, Princess Margaret and Yehudi Menuhin who built a house there and later such slightly sinister figures as Roy Cohn. Things changed, and not for the better, with the arrival of a daily boat and later still the building of an airstrip. I've dealt briefly with the drug culture and general debauchery which followed.
I have also touched on times of great happiness: Oxford and time spent in the English countryside: Denmark and then reflections on the troubled age in which we live. The last poem in the collection is my favorite and the most important to me. See what you think.
