The Shetland Islands form a distinct fishing community on the northern fringe of the UK.

While this book has been commissioned to mark the first 50 years of the Shetland Fishermen's Association, it is also a detailed history of that period - the events, the boats and the Shetland fishermen themselves.

It describes in detail the many changes that have taken place: the growth of seine netting for haddock and whiting; the revival of the driftnet fishery for herring in the 1950s; the introduction of purse seining in the 1960s and the islanders' positive reaction after initial hostility.

The book also explains some of the problems and benefits brought to the Shetland fishing industry by Britain's entry into the EEC.
