Nineteen Eighty-Four

Airstrip One - formerly called Great Britain - is a place of constant war and omnipresent surveillance. The oppressive thought police known as Thinkpol ensures no citizen steps out of line. Control is total. Winston Smith, an unremarkable worker for the Ministry of Truth, spends his days diligently falsifying historical records. When Winston discovers a corner in his apartment that is not in view of State surveillance, he finally has a tiny space to dream and think. But thinking for yourself is forbidden, and Winston's taste for freedom leads to ideas of rebellion and to an illegal love affair, and he enters a world in which one false move can mean a fate worse than death.
