Design & Technology Box 2 : Project-based Learning

Each box in this six-box series contains 28 unique projects that encourage pupils to use analytical, creative and critical thinking skills as they explore and attempt to respond to the projects.

All projects begin with the 'design and make' instruction.

To allow for collaboration and group work, there are six duplicate copies of each project card.

The cross-curricular projects used in this series are based on real-world tasks, issues or challenges and, importantly, encourage the use of readily available materials and resources.

Emphasis is placed on recycling, upcycling and repurposing.

Pupils will explore why and how people design and make products that meet a purpose for a particular audience, and they will use their knowledge and skills to develop their own products.

The projects are organised into four broad sections (each section has seven projects). * Food, Cooking and Nutrition - projects are designed to develop pupils' understanding of how and why natural and processed food products are produced, prepared, cooked, preserved and/or served. * Clothing and Textiles - projects are designed to develop pupils' understanding of how and why clothing and other textile products are designed and made using thread, wool, fabric or felt. * Building and Construction - projects are designed to develop pupils' understanding of how and why people design and make items, including buildings, bridges, furniture, instruments and other man-made features. * Technological Advancements - projects are designed to develop pupils' understanding of how and why technology has developed over time and how major technological advancements have changed the ways we live, work, travel and enjoy our recreational time.
