Aspiring young writer Harriet (Patricia Walters) leads a sheltered life on the banks of the Ganges along with her two friends Valerie (Adrienne Corri) and Melanie (Radha Burnier).

However, the arrival of wounded American, Captain John (Thomas E.

Breen) creates tension between the girls, in particular Harriet whose reserved nature results in severe bouts of jealousy as she struggles to express her true desires and feelings.
