Roland Ruffell's 48 years on the railway involved him all varieties of traction.

His wide-ranging recollections tell how he began as a cleaner at Hornsey, then becoming a fireman, and later a driver, at King's Cross 'Top Shed', firing the famous 'Elizabethan' express, among others.

He then transferred to diesels in Hertfordshire, and finished his career driving electric units.
