British Imperialism

Part of the Contesting the Past series

Imperial historiography has become something of a dialogue of the deaf during recent decades, with too many senior authorities taking too little notice of recent developments (such as literary discourse theory) while younger scholars devote themselves to recent developments to the exclusion (if not ignorance) of important earlier debates. In other cases, national or geographical divisions separate historiographical debates from one another; Africanists, Canadianists and Australian Aboriginal studies specialists - to take only a few examples - inhabit different worlds with separate journals, conferences and internal debates.

A volume that offers a conspectus and evaluation of different theorizing and research in the field will tackle the need for a book that offers students a holistic view of Empire and imperialism. It will also make a considerable contribution in its own scholarly right.
