Balthazar Blake (Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern Manhattan who combines his awe-inspiring magic powers with state-of-the-art technology to protect the city from the evil clutches of his powerful arch enemy, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina).

Realising that he is going to need assistance if he is to succeed in taking Horvarth down, Balthazar recruits average college student Dave Stutler (Baruchel) as his unwilling protege.

The hapless Dave must now survive his unconventional and often extremely dangerous training as he works alongside Balthazar to stop the forces of darkness and save the city.
