Frank Perry and Sydney Pollack co-direct this 1960s US drama based on the short story by John Cheever.

Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) decides to swim across his Connecticut suburb using a chain of swimming pools in his neighbours' gardens.

Along the way he meets a host of women from his past, faces humiliation and has various passionate encounters, before arriving home with a startling revelation...
