After the death of fellow journalist Michelle, reporter Steve Everett (Clint Eastwood) inherits her last assignment: a human interest story about the last eight hours of death row inmate Frank Beechum (Isaiah Washington), convicted of the murder of a supermarket checkout girl.

However, after the interview with the convict, Everett begins to believe that Beechum is innocent and works around the clock to find the vital evidence which just might save an innocent life.
