Margaret Newman Turner has long admired the work of Joseph Murray Ince and has researched his pictures and drawings over many years. In recent times she has been assisted by a relative of Ince who has helped expand the knowledge of Inces wider family.
Ince was born in London but brought up in Presteigne from a very early age after his father joined a medical practice in the town shortly after the start of the Napoleonic wars. He studied in Hereford under the tuition of David Cox, then spent much time in London where many members of the family lived, travelled around parts of the UK to undertake worknotably Oxford and Hastings, then a favourite haunt of paintersreturning at times to visit his father in Presteigne. From this base he also explored and painted parts of Wales. In later years he lived for a while in Cambridge where he also carried out much work, five paintings being given to Queen Victoria when she visited the city. This book explains the influences on Ince and the breadth of his work, as well as exploring his family life and wider connections.
