Suddenly there were no secrets any more. Everyone knew there was going to be a war, which meant that all children in danger areas like London were to be sent to the country.

Then on Friday 1st September 1939, it happened...When World War II started in 1939 everybody was terrified that the enemy would bomb London to ruins, and careful plans were made to evacuate thousands of schoolchildren to homes in the country.

The three Clark children were sent to Dorset. Laura, Andy and Tim with their name and address pinned to them, joined the straggling procession of evacuees to the station.
