Landing first in Sicily, Corporal Chase (George Peppard) and his squad soon come face to face with the human cost of war as they make their advance through Italy.

As their contacts with the local population become more personal and complex, the men are increasingly exposed to the full horrors of war raging around them, and soon find themselves faced with a range of life-changing dilemmas.
