Ais Gill, Blea Moor, Shap and Stainmore are names that resonate with many followers of steam.

They were places where the magnificent, raw power of steam traction could be experienced as locomotives being worked to their limit tackled some of the most arduous routes in Great Britain.

The superb scenery around Shap provided the perfect backdrop to photograph the legendary 'Princess Coronation' Pacifics and suchlike and acted like a magnet for generations of photographers.
