This is a story about a spider named Charlotte and a pig named Wilbur. The pig is owned by a little girl named Fern.

Fern is a farm girl. The pig was born as a runt, too small to be of use to the farm. Just as the farmer was about to kill the pig, the farmer's daughter asked for the pig to be saved. Her father gave the pig to his daughter to care for it.

When Winter comes, Charlotte, the spider, dies, but before she dies she gives birth to 514 children, baby spiders.

As you will see from the cover, the pig has a worried look on her face. This is because the pig, Wilbur, is in danger to be slaughtered.

What saves Wilbur is Charlotte is very intelligent for a mere spider. Charles weaves a spider's web, showing words the farmer can read. Charlotte writes messages praising Wilbur (such as "Some Pig") in her web in order to persuade the farmer to let him live.
