When the evil sorceress queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh) learns of a prophecy that a child with a special birthmark will bring about her downfall, she imprisons every pregnant woman in her realm.

After the child is born, she is smuggled out of the castle and sent downriver where she is found by aspiring sorcerer Willow Ufgood (Davis).

To save her life, he must take her to the enchantress Fin Raziel (Patricia Hayes).

Along the way he joins forces with swordsman Madmartigan (Kilmer) and the two are pursued relentlessly by Bavmorda's daughter Sorsha (Whalley).
