It is the year 1599. Mark (15) and his sister, Catherine (12) set off from their family estate in Northumberland on a perilous journey to rescue their brother, Sir Richard Kempe, who has been falsely accused of Treason and is imprisoned in the Tower of London awaiting execution.

Their footsteps are dogged by the accuser, Mark's scheming tutor, Cain Webster.

They survive a mine disaster near Newcastle where they meet the mysterious Tom (13).

They are shipwrecked off Spurn Head, witness witchcraft at Clifford's Tower, York and then join a group of Travelling Players.

After performing at Stourbridge Fair, Cambridge, they are caught by Webster and taken to London where the story has its unexpected and dramatic ending.

This historical adventure novel began as ten episodes of the BBC Schools' Radio programme, "Movement and Drama" for 9-11 year olds (Brian Sanders wrote and presented the programme for 10 years).
