Documents of the English Reformation

Bray, Gerald L.(Edited by)
See all formats and editions

This is a compilation of a vast range of documents, covering the period of the English reformation from 1526 to 1700.

Many of these documents have been inaccessible to the student until now.

The documents deal with the development of religious ideas and practices which are so central to any understanding of the period.

They are presented in original form with parallel translations where necessary, resulting from the author's collaboration with the Theological Work Group of Latimer House, Oxford.

Each document is preceded by a brief introduction explaining what it is, and what purpose it served when written.

The translations have been made with due consideration to the pre-Reformation perspective.

The collection will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of theology, the Anglican church, late medieval history and early modern English history. Included are 58 documents covering all the main statutes (including the Acts of Supremacy and Uniformity), Injunctions and Orders (including the Edwardian and Marian Injunctions), Articles (including the 42 and the 39 Articles), prefaces to prayer books, Biblical translations, and other relevant documents (such as the Wittenberg Articles, Canons of the Synod of Dort and the Savoy Declaration).

Eight Appendices including comparative tables such as "From the Augsburg Confession to the 39 Articles" are featured.
