Domesticities

The last time a selection of home stories from the New York Times Magazine was published in book form was in 1976 and is now a collectors' item. This successor to that volume represents what is happening now at the forefront of the architecture and decorating worlds.

The homes, which have previously appeared in the New York Times Magazine, run the gamut from big to small, modest to grand, retro to cutting-edge.

There are homes in and around New York, Idaho, California, and Miami and their diversity shows that of all today's trends, eclecticism rules.The homes are divided into four categories: The New Classics, The Mavericks, Modern Living, and Personality Profiles.

The homes often prove to be personal, vivid, and sometimes idiosyncratic portraits of the people who designed them or live in them.

About half the dwellings shown are designers' own homes, including architect Ron Radziner of Marmol Radziner and Associates, artist/designer Jonathan Adler, and two homes of famed designers Diamond Baratta.
