The psychological realism of German painter Otto Dix (1891-1969) embodies the experience of Germany between the wars.

While Dix is best known for his paintings and etchings from this period, which focus on the reality of war and its effects (with disfigurement caused by war wounds a frequent theme), and the world of prostitutes, this video, directed by Reiner E.

Moritz, looks at his career as a whole. It traces his development and examines his influences, notably the masters of the German Renaissance.

Reactions to his work are also discussed, many of his works were reviled and spat at, and Dix was included in the Nazi exhibition of "Degenerate Art".
