By the mid 1800s, the Pre-Raphaelites were the most talked about movement in contemporary cuture.

Now, 150 years later, the popularity of leading (male) exponents such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones and John Everett Millais is greater than ever, while the crucial role played by women artists has largely been forgotten.

This publication brings together paintings, drawings, photographs and more to show how women contributed to the pre-Raphaelite movement.

The artists include Barbara Bodichon, Anna Howitt, Elizabeth Siddal, Rebecca Solomon, Emma Sandys, Julia Margaret Cameron, Lucy and Catherine Madox Brown, Marie Spartali Stillman, Francesca Alexander, Evelyn De Morgan, Marianne Stokes and Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale.

Many works are reproduced and documented in the book in order to illuminate a significant chapter in the neglected history of women artists.
