These papers are based on presentations prepared for the Hume-Rothery Symposium: Scattering Studies and the Fundamental Properties of Materials.

The original symposium description is as follows: "This symposium, held in honor of the 2007 Hume-Rothery Award recipient, Simon C.

Moss, will focus on some of the modern tools in place for probing the fundamental properties of atoms, metals and complex materials, from electron behavior to properties. All participants are invited speakers and have been asked to provide an assessment of our current understanding of some aspects of the fundamental properties of matter.

Topics of interest include state-of-the-art diffuse scattering and transmission electron microscopy techniques applied to bulk alloys, thin-films and surfaces, oxides ands superconductors, bulk and nano-structured semiconductors, liquid and glasses, and modern quantum mechanical-based theories geared toward an understanding of the fundamental properties of these materials. Papers that cover "first-principles" approaches to experimental results, with strong emphasis on scattering methods and disordered materials will be presented in the spirit of the work carried out by Simon Moss."
