A Day in the Death of Joe Egg

Peter Medak directs this 1970s dark comedy drama adapted by Peter Nichols from his own play.

Bri (Alan Bates) and Sheila (Janet Suzman) are a Bristol couple who cope with their daughter Jo (Elizabeth Robillard)'s disability by trying to make light of the situation, and even involving Jo in their jokes.

But while Sheila clings to the distant hope that Jo's condition might improve, Bri wants to see her institutionalised and begins to entertain fantasies of euthanasia.
