Columbia Classics: Volume 4

Collection of six classic films produced by Columbia Pictures.

In 'His Girl Friday' (1940) newspaper editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant) is devastated when his star reporter Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) reveals she is leaving journalism behind to marry her new beau Bruce (Ralph Bellamy).

As Hildy, who also happens to be Walter's ex-wife, prepares herself for her new life, Walter does everything he can to get her to change her mind, including offering her the chance to write the story of a lifetime. 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' (1967) stars Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn and Sidney Poitier.

Upper class couple Matt Drayton (Tracy) and wife Christina (Hepburn) are lost for words when their daughter Joey (Katherine Houghton) returns from her Hawaiian holiday with a fiancé in tow.

What shocks them is not so much that Joey is engaged but that her proposed husband - research scientist John Prentice (Poitier) - is African American.

The Draytons have always believed themselves to be broad-minded, liberal people, but find their ideals tested when John says that the wedding will not go ahead without their whole-hearted approval.

In 'Kramer Vs Kramer' (1979) Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman)'s whole world changes when his wife Joanna (Meryl Streep) walks out, leaving him to care for their young son.

The additional strain causes Ted to lose his job, although having to spend more time with his son serves to strengthen their bond.

When his wife reappears and demands custody, Ted decides to fight back.

In 'Starman' (1984), while still grieving the loss of her husband, Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen) is shocked when an alien lands on Earth and takes on his appearance.

When he asks her to take him to Arizona to allow him to catch up with his rescue ship, the pair begin their journey, growing closer day by day.

However, their progress is hindered by a determined government agent who hopes to capture the alien for scientific study. 'Sleepless in Seattle' (1993) stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Sam Baldwin (Hanks) has lost his wife to cancer and, left to bring up his son alone, tries to start over by moving to Seattle.

His son turns him into a radio heartthrob, however, when he makes an on-air appeal to potential new partners for his grief-stricken father.

Annie Reed (Ryan), despite being engaged, answers the call and romance blossoms between the two people, even though they live on different sides of the country.

Finally, in 'Punch-Drunk Love' (2002), Barry Egan (Adam Sandler) is a socially isolated Californian businessman who runs a wholesaling business in the San Fernando Valley.

When he meets businesswoman Lena Leonard (Emily Watson), it seems that there might be a chance for romance to blossom between them.

Lena is certainly eager and she pushes Barry to go on a date with her, but the course of their relationship runs anything but smoothly, especially when Lena has to contend with Barry's occasional bouts of destructive rage and his accidental involvement in a phone sex racket run by petty Utah gangster Dean Trumbell (Philip Seymour Hoffman).
