A teacher's guide to Charles Darwin : his life, journeys and discoveries

Charles Darwin lived and worked for 40 years at Down House in Kent, where in the privacy of his study he wrote "On the Origin of Species".

Drawing on documentary sources and research, this book discusses Darwin and his work, from his early life to the "Beagle" voyage and how his theory of evolution shook contemporary Victorian thought.

Relating Darwin's work to his family life and Down House itself in the context of Victorian England, the book is intended as a source of support material for teachers of science or history, and those planning to visit the house, open to the public from July 1997 after a programme of restoration by English Heritage.

National Curriculum pointers and pupil activities for the classroom are included.
