Brian Grover was a brilliant young engineer who seemed to have everything: dark look looks, a wealthy family and a Cambridge education. His father wanted him to join the army. His mother wanted him to marry a 'nice girl' and settle down.

But Brian had other ideas...In 1931 he fled the recession that had hit the West and headed east, to seek fortune and adventure in the most turbulent and dangerous countries on the planet: Stalin's Soviet Union.

It was a move that would dramatically change the course of his life. One night, on a visit to the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, he met a beautiful young nurse called Anna Petrovna.

Their meeting marked the beginning of a passionate, extraordinary love affair that was to enchant the world.
