The Middle Ages : An Encyclopedia for Students

To address the needs of younger students, the abridged text has been entirely rewritten in accessible language and shorter sentences.

More than 300 illustrations, including photographs of art and architecture, maps, diagrams, and heraldic insignia, enliven the volumes.

Additionally, three sections of full-colour plates display the daily life, the art and architecture, and the people of the Middle Ages.

The list of entries is based on the original "Dictionary of the Middle Ages".

Topics have been selected for their interest to younger students, their relevance to the curriculum, their historical and multicultural importance (including the Jewish, Byzantine, and Islamic worlds), and their representation of women.

The result is a curriculum-related list that includes accounts of "Beowulf", the Medici Family, and Muhammad as well as more extensive surveys of broad topics like Agriculture and Feudalism.
