Melangell was an Irish Princess. Her father was determined to marry her off to a nobleman in his court. Melangell fled the court, vowing to stay single and arrived in Wales where she lived as a hermit for 15 years.

One day, by chance she met a man, the Prince of Powys. He was enchanted with her beauty but she was determined to stay single. The prince then asked her to build a cathedral and in return, she would be given the valley.
