The Victorian eye: a political history of light and vision in Britain, 1800-1910

During the 19th century, Britain became the first gaslit society.

At the same time, the government significantly expanded its power to observe and monitor its subjects.

This study examines the way people saw and were seen in this gaslit age and how this affected Victorian culture.
