Education: Law, Policy and Practice in Northern Ireland

See all formats and editions

This is the first textbook to be published which is entirely devoted to education law in Northern Ireland.

It is primarily a legal text, aimed at increasing understanding of the legal aspects of the school system, so that lawyers and other professional advisers can provide children, parents and teachers with accurate advice as to their rights.

It will be the first point of reference for all legal practitioners but should also be used by all schools, school governors and those involved in educational administration as a benchmark for good practice.

The author teaches education law to both undergraduate law students and also teachers on the Masters of Education course at the Queen's University Graduate School of Education.

She has published widely in the area, for example in the Child and Family Law Quarterly, Education Law Journal and Education and the Law.

She is a member of the Board of Governors of a voluntary grammar school and is currently chairing the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission's Working Group on Education Rights for the proposed Bill of Rights. Topics covered in this title include: history and policy underlying education reform; school government; admissions; the curriculum; school attendance; discipline; special educational needs; integrated education; and, school transport.

This book is a comprehensive and well-argued compilation of complex education law. 'I commend it to anyone with an interest in education in Northern Ireland.

I have no doubt that it will quickly become an invaluable reference work for those working in this field' - Nigel Hamilton, Permanent Secretary, Department of Education. 'This very well-researched addition to the publications by SLS will be welcomed by all of us in the legal profession, for whom an understanding of the statutory provisions and the case-law on education is becoming increasingly important in daily practice.

Laura Lundy has written a very wide-ranging book, key chapters of which are on admissions, discipline and special educational needs and I am quite certain that her book will become the accepted reference text on education law in Northern Ireland. I am delighted to congratulate SLS on another landmark publication' - Brian Fee QC, former chairman of the Bar Council of Northern Ireland.
