Discourse of the Pastoral Care (New ed)

"Discourse of the Pastoral Care" was first published in 1692, and had a new preface and chapter added in 1713 (3rd edition).

It was a pastoral care manual for the Church of England, and was in use well into the 19th century.

Since the Church of England had lost the power of coercive discipline, the text aimed to show the priest how to exert moral and spiritual discipline by using reason and moral persuasion.

This critical edition provides an introduction to the life of Gilbert Burnet, and the text is annotated with biblical and bibliographical citations, as well as definitions of archaic terms.
