Jeremy Bentham was a ferocious critic of political and legal justification.

He sought to replace the ramshackle systems which surrounded him with new, complete codes of law, constitutions and methods of punishment.

These were to be based on a single value - the maximization of utility.

This collection presents extracts of Bentham's writing on utility and government, and includes nearly the whole of Bentham's "An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation".
