See all formats and editions

This set of two compact discs presents three dozen selections (and almost as many composers) spanning all periods and genres of Western music.

Here in a convenient format are recordings of most of the music discussed and printed in score in James R.

Briscoe's "Historical Anthology of Music by Women". Included are songs and choral works by the Countess of Dia, Anne Boleyn, Maddalena Casulana, Francesca Caccini, Maria Theresia von Paradis, Josephine Lang, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Amy Beach, Pauline Viardot-Garcia, Lili Boulanger, Alma Mahler, and Louise Talma.

There are chamber works by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Anna Amalie, Clara Schumann, Louise Farrenc, Rebecca Clarke, Germaine Tailleferre, Julia Perry, and Violet Archer; and piano solos by Marianne von Martinez, Maria Szymanowska, Clara Schumann, Amy Beach, Ruth Crawford Seeger, and Grazyna Bacewicz.

Among the larger pieces are a Sinfonia by Maria Grimani, Miriam Gideon's "The Hound of Heaven", the "First Movement" of Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's "Symphony No. 1", and scenes from two operas - "The Wreckers" by Ethel Smyth and Mary, "Queen of Scots" by Thea Musgrave.
