The landscape has shaped their work: George Orwell found, in the village of Wallington, his inspiration for "Animal Farm"; E.M.

Forster's home, Rook Nest in Old Stevenage is the model for "Howard's End"; Berkhamsted is revealed to be "Greeneland", a place inhabited by many of Graham Greene's exotic characters; and George Bernard Shaw fantasises moving in with the postmistress of Ayot St Lawrence in his play "Village Wooing".

In the Tudor age Sir Francis Bacon and Sir Thomas More sought "Utopia" whilst in the county.
