The work collected in Gatherings in Biosemiotics presents the current spectrum of thought on semiotic biology in one congregate volume.

The contributions are divided into three parts. The first part of the book provides the views on the importance of semiotics to biology as seen by Kalevi Kull, Terrence Deacon, Stuart Kauffman, Howard Pattee, and Myrdene Anderson.

They also formulate some focal problems of biosemiotics and evaluate the state of the art of the field.

The second part includes a history of the Gatherings in Biosemiotics 2001 - 2012, the first and thus far the only regular series of worldwide conferences in semiotic biology, as told by their organizers, Jesper Hoffmeyer, Donald Favareau, Claus Emmeche, Kalevi Kull, Anton Markos, Almo Farina, Barend van Heusden, Argyris Arnellos, Joao Carlos Major, Victoria Alexander, Timo Maran, and others.

The third part provides the full set of abstracts presented to the 12th Gatherings in Biosemiotics, that took place in July 2012 in Tartu, Estonia.
