Collapsing Democracies : The battle for power and survival

See all formats and editions

Public anger at the increasingly poor quality of public services in democracies is becoming a threat to democracy itself. Either Governments and their State Sectors are oblivious to this, or have no idea as to the cause or solution.

Various academic papers, referred to in Chapter 3, show a significant rise in public dissatisfaction with the quality of governance in democracies. This is resulting in an increase in populism of left and right, with a decline in democratic freedoms across ten countries over the 15 years to 2018, after continuous democratisation growth over the previous 200 years. The growth curve has moved beyond the dangerous point of inflection, which suggests that the move back to autocracies could accelerate, unless urgent corrective action is taken. Recent events confirm this danger.

The purpose of this book is to analyse the cause of this disillusionment and the common bureaucratic governance "flaws" across nearly all democracies. It offers proven solutions to enable democracies to rapidly restore their credibility and resist a new generation of autocrats.
