But larger than life though he is Dalziel fails to impress the eager young detective on their first meeting! When Dalziel is kidnapped, it takes a man of Pascoe's inexperience to talk himself into being taking hostage as well.

Now their lives rest on the whim of a madman -- worse, a madman with a serious and justifiable grudge against the Superintendent. Can Dalziel and Pascoe get over their differences and work together to escape their gaoler?
