In the Gauley River region of West Virginia, attorney Harper Wolfe loses what she loves most when her twin, Henry, dies in what appears to be an automobile accident. Henry was the beloved only son, and the attorney for the family business, Wolfe Mining. Possibly throwing away her own career, Harper steps into Henry's role at the coal mining business and drowns in legalities of mountaintop removal mining and its effects, coal mining opposition, and the political repercussions of the business' practices. What she uncovers causes her to question how well she really knew her twin, and how deceptive is her father?

Childhood friend of Henry, Environmental Consultant and river guide, Christian Gallagher brings Harper a voicemail that recorded the car wreck. It is clear that the wreck wasn't an accident at all. He is immediately thrown into helping Harper find out what happened to Henry. What they find brings into question everything each one stands for, and feeds their doubts about the other.

Putting aside their differences, the unlikely pair unravel the layers to expose the truth, but not before Harper is put directly in the killer's crosshairs. As Christian fights to release Harper from the snares of death, will his heart be spared?
