First published in 1991. Children in the Wind first appeared as a serial in the Asahi Newspaper, in which it was published over a two-month period late in 1936. By the year 1936, Japan - like America - was starting to recover from the Great Depression.

There were good reasons to be hopeful about domestic economic recovery and the expansion of trade with foreign countries.

But the year 1936 also marks the beginning of a gradual tightening of authoritarian controls throughout Japan.

We see the events unfold through the eyes of the brothers, Sampei and Zenta.
