MAIN BLURB

There is an obvious need for a sourcebook on sexuality in the ancient world. There are now many classes dealing directly with gender and sexuality in Greece and Rome. Sexuality is now an important part of any course in Classical Civilization. And the subject itself is perenially interesting.

I am proposing a sourcebook on ancient sexuality that would make it easy for both students and teachers to get access to a fascinating, important, but difficult part of ancient Mediterranean culture. Sex permeated every aspect of Greek and Roman culture, and thus the sources are widely separated by time, place, and scholarly discipline. Sex is found in every artistic medium; in every literary genre: carved in stone, scratched on plaster, painted on vases, performed on stage, written on papyrus. For our written sources, much of the non-literary material is obscure and difficult to find. Little has been translated. The literary remains are equally scattered across all sorts and conditions of genres, and existing translations are often inadequate.

This book will present new translations of all the ancient material collected in the book, and it will cover the whole geographical range of the Greco-Roman world, including Egypt.
